The UFL continues to bring forth all kinds of drama on the field and even off the field.
Week four was highlighted by surprises, including another OT game with rule changes to avoid another controversial ending. We also experienced one of the best Friday Night Lights this season as Columbus gained their first win against a formerly undefeated team. Plus, we take a short look back at the events from last Sunday that rocked the UFL community.
Here are my three takeaways for week four…
1. Birmingham Needs a Drastic Intervention
I was actually there in-person for the home kickoff game between the Orlando Storm and Birmingham Stallions last Saturday afternoon. When it was all over, I think I felt what NY Jets fans felt the last several seasons: Depression.
Week four ended with the first shutout in the history of the UFL as the Storm dominated Birmingham 16-0, keeping their undefeated record. For a team that has won three consecutive championships, you think this game would have ended the other way around.
Birmingham couldn’t pull off anything big, offensively or defensively. Even switching out QB Matt Corral for backup Michael Hiers didn’t pay any dividends. This was, in my opinion, the most mediocre performance by the Stallions ever. This is probably the first time in years where fans were like, “Something’s gotta give.”
This team could be on the verge of relocating or worse if something doesn’t change, whether it’s the players or coaching staff.
2. Orlando: The New Championship Favorites?
When the week was over, every team had at least one win on their overall record, but Orlando became the only team without a loss after the Dallas Renegades lost 28-14 to the Columbus Aviators, receiving their first loss of the season.
Does this mean that the Orlando Storm are the new favorites to win the upcoming UFL championship? Speaking from a fan perspective, they are. There is no denying how tough they look for a new club. Head coach Anthony Becht has done an incredible job making an impact on the team.
However, the reigning champion Defenders aren’t that far behind, and the Renegades aren’t miles away from the title despite the loss.
3. A Sunday Smorgasbord of Trades
This past Sunday, fans were hit with a barrage of trades and releases from all around the UFL.
We learned that Birmingham made a deal with Orlando to trade QB Corral and DE Amani Bledsoe to the storm for QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson. DTR has played only one game with Orlando this season, and with fans having enough of Corral’s shortcomings, adding him can be good…or could be bad.
Louisville and DC were also part of a QB trade of their own. The Kings chose to trade QB Jason Bean to DC for QB Mike DiLiello. Louisville has also released Benny Snell, while Birmingham cut Perrion Winfrey three weeks after re-signing him.
