From overlooked prospect to championship-winning quarterback, Alex McGough has carved out a name for himself in spring football.
The Birmingham Stallions quarterback started out his football career at Florida International University. In his four seasons there, he recorded a total of 806 completions for 9,091 yards, 65 touchdowns, and 37 interceptions. He also showed natural abilities as a running back with 308 rush attempts for 535 yards and 16 touchdowns. He leads the FIU football program in career pass attempts and career passing touchdowns.
McGough was drafted to the Seattle Seahawks in the 7th round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He spent two seasons with them before jumping to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans, then back to the Seahawks. Unfortunately, he couldn’t get off the ground in the NFL.
Everything changed in 2022 when he signed with the Birmingham Stallions in the revamped USFL after being drafted in the 6th round of the USFL draft. He took over for injured QB J’Mar Smith in the USFL championship game that year, and ever since that day, he’s lead Birmingham to back-to-back championships and won himself MVP Honors.
McGough resigned with the Stallions back in January of this year. Now, the 29-year-old quarterback from Tampa, FL, looks to be a part of history this season as he and the team pursue an unprecedented, fourth consecutive championship title.
Additional Fact About Alex McGough
His accomplishments in the USFL gave him another chance to become an NFL star as he signed with the Green Bay Packers. However, he spent only two seasons as part of the practice squad.
McGough actually wanted to try his hand at being a wide receiver during his time there. However, he found himself competing against the likes of Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks. This explained why he was never listed in the starting roster.
He may have the speed built for the position, but he was built for passing the ball. So, this means he can be a double threat when he wants to. His opponents better be ready for what he will pull on the field.
