Joe Burrow will enter his fourth season as the highest-paid player in NFL history.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported that the Bengals quarterback agreed to a 5-year contract extension worth $275 million. This contract includes a guaranteed amount of $219.01 million and averages $55 million a year.
This deal surpasses the 5-year, $262.5 million deal that LA Chargers QB Justin Herbert reached back in July. He is now both the highest paid quarterback and NFL player in general.
Since the Bengals drafted Joe Burrow, he has led the team to back-to-back AFC North titles and two AFC championship appearances. He even led them to an appearance at Super Bowl 56, the team’s first Super Bowl since 1989.
His records also speak for themselves. In 2021, he earned the title of Comeback Player of the Year after bouncing back from his ACL/MCL injury that ended his 2020 season early.
He even played last season after undergoing surgery for a ruptured appendix. He recorded his best season, setting single-season franchise records for most touchdown passes (35), pass attempts (606), and completions (414). These records also earned him a nomination for Most Valuable Player and an invitation to the Pro Bowl.
The 26-year-old has now recorded 11,774 passing yards, 82 touchdowns, and 31 interceptions in his career.
There is no doubt that the Bengals organization made no mistakes in bringing in Burrow. Bengals owner Mike Brown confirmed that the team was going to restructure finances to ensure they would give him a long-term deal.
Now, the deal ensures that the future of the Cincinnati Bengals will be bright for years to come. After three seasons with the team, Burrow earned it.
Right now, he is trying to fight through a strained calf muscle he suffered during training camp to make it to Sunday and lead his team against town rival Cleveland Browns.
