Tua Tagovailoa might have went out-of-bounds with his recent postgame conference.
This past Sunday, the Dolphins quarterback addressed the media after the tough 29-27 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. However, a few of his statements had sports analysts, former NFL players, and social media users criticizing his role as the team captain.
It turned out that Tagovailoa revealed a few internal issues going on with the Dolphins. First, it was about the leadership status.
“I think it starts with the leadership in helping articulate that for the guys, and then what were expecting out of the guys. Are we getting that? Are we not getting that?”
What really had everyone talking was when he spoke about attendance in player meetings.
“We have guys showing up to player-only meetings late. Guys not showing up to player-only meetings. There is a lot that goes into that. Do we have to make that mandatory? Do we not have to make that mandatory? So it’s a lot of things of that nature that we got to get cleaned up. It starts with the little things like that.”
Those Remarks Weren’t Necessary. Why?
If I ever had to tell Tua Tagovailoa anything about those remarks of his, I’d tell him they were irrelevant. He wasn’t acting like a quarterback or a captain when he sounded off. He didn’t take responsibility for the loss, especially since his three interceptions were a factor in the reason they lost.
It’s as if in the spur of the moment, he said things the public wasn’t supposed to know, and he called out his own teammates. The backlash began a few hours later and continued into the next day. The people had every right to question his leadership. He should have kept those words to himself and complain about it to the coach or another staff member behind closed doors.
Tagovailoa might have recently apologized for the comments, but it doesn’t change what Dolphins fans have known for the last few years: The team is broken both on and off the field. Those comments of his only increased the state of doubt within the franchise, and that is something it can’t deal with now.
Change needs to happen within the team. Whether it’s with coaching, management, ownership, or any combination of the three, some things need to change before Miami loses any kind of chance to turn their season around.
For now, they’ll turn their focus to the Cleveland Browns this Sunday afternoon.
