The Kansas City Chiefs will not have to worry about Chris Jones being MIA anymore.
The defensive tackle ended his holdout on Monday after agreeing on a new, one-year contract with the team. He could now be available to play for this season when the Chiefs visit the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
Jones has been absent for months because he was waiting for a new deal. He didn’t play in the Chiefs’ season opener, and he didn’t report to training camp during the offseason. However, he was seen sitting in a suite last Thursday night.
He was entering the final season of a four-year, $80 million contract deal he signed back in 2020.
In a statement, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said:
“Chris is an elite player in this league and, over the last seven years, he’s really developed into a leader on our team. He’s been instrumental to our success and Super Bowl championship runs, and it was a priority for us to keep him in a Chiefs uniform. I’d like to thank Chris and his representation, Michael and Jason Katz, for their desire and patience to get this done. Through this process, two things were obvious: Chris wanted to be a Chief, and the Katz brothers worked diligently on his behalf.”
What Are the Incentives Chris Jones Received?
Sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Jones’s new contract includes incentives that will allow him to earn more than $19.5 million this season. This amount was what he was originally scheduled to make under his old contract.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talks said the incentives in the contract include:
- $1 million for 35% playing time
- $1 million more for 50% playing time
- $1.25 million for 10 sacks (this existed before the new deal)
- $500,000 more for 15 sacks
- $1 million for appearing in the Super Bowl and selected first-team All Pro
- $2 million for winning the Super Bowl and named Defensive Player of the Year
